These galaxies show some level of non-stellar activity, or perhaps an unusually high rate of `starbursts' (supernovae) or star formation. LINER (Low-Ionization Narrow Emission-line Region) galaxies are found in most spiral galaxies. The origin of the power in these galaxies is not known exactly; it may be a baby-quasar, a starburst region or emission from shock-heated gas. We have studied these objects using data from the Hubble Space Telescope to find out more.
(Information on X-ray selected narrow emission line galaxies will be reaching this page soon!)
