There is now ample evidence that long gamma-ray bursts are associated with massive stars and with a particular type of supernovae (broad-lined Ic). I will briefly review the young history of this field, show the few examples where the 
SN-GRB association is unambiguous, talk about the less direct evidence, and place these SNe in the general context of massive stars explosions.
