Although "completed" in 2005, SALT underwent extensive modifications and repairs following the identification of major optical problems in 2006/7.  These were only 
completed in 2010, following which the telescope was recommissioned and is finally in the science operations phase.  I will summarise the history of this period, 
including showing early results.  This has resulted in SALT demonstrating the true potential of the spherical mirror paradigm for low-cost large telescope design.
