I will give a review of the current status of our understanding of AGN 
evolution in the context of their space-density and host galaxy properties. 
I will then present recent results from out new survey to find the most 
distant AGN with the aim of probing the Epoch of Reionization via 21cm 
absorption with LOFAR.
