It has been increasingly recognized over the last few years that many of the clues to the problem of galaxy formation are preserved in stars in galaxy outskirts. Properties of stars in the outer regions of galaxies  are therefore directly reflecting the details of galaxy assembly.  I will start by presenting briefly what we know about the stellar halo of the Local Group galaxies, and expand on the recent results for galaxies beyond the Local Group. I will finally present future work.
