AGN triggering processes have remained surprisingly poorly understood until today. Major mergers of gas-rich galaxies have long been recognized as likely triggers for AGN activity, but observational 
evidence remains mixed, emphasizing the possible importance of other processes. I will discuss results from AGN host galaxy studies addressing the question of what triggers AGN.
