The Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (ATLAS) is the biggest open time key project on the Herschel Space Observatory with very wide-ranging science goals, from finding debris disks around nearby stars to resolving galaxy proto-clusters detected by the Planck satellite. In this talk I will present some of the first results from ATLAS, focussing mainly on the multiwavelength work in my research group at the Open University, including the cosmic star formation history of quasar host galaxies and a revolutionary new technique for finding strong gravitational lenses.
