Large- and small-scale dynamics of Saturn's magnetosphere

Dr. Nick Achilleos (Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, UCL)

The Cassini spacecraft's magnetometer data set has revealed many fascinating features of magnetospheric structure at Saturn. We will look at a review of some initial and recent studies by the Cassini magnetomter team, including: the response of the outer field structure to solar wind variations; the curious 'bimodal' nature of magnetopause size; some features of the mysterious 'rotational anomaly'; and evidence for weak polar flattening of the magnetopause boundary, consistent with a disk-like internal obstacle.
