The magnetopause transition parameter

Dr. Mike Hapgood (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory)

The transition parameter was developed in the 1990s as a way to re-order measurements in the boundary layer between the magnetosphere and magnetosheath. It tracks the mixing of electron populations in this layer but at the same time brings remarkable order to independent plasma parameters such as magnetic field and bulk velocity. The talk will review the development of the transition parameter and then discuss ideas for its future application.
