Planetary Science Group Instrumentation

The MSSL Planetary Physics Group have provided instrumentation for a large number of space flight missions. These are listed below. We also have developed a world class electron calibration system for 30-20,000 eV electrons, used on Cassini, which has enabled additional mission involvements in Mars Express and Venus Express.

  • Penetrators - being developed for exploration of solar system planetary bodies

  • PanCam - Camera system being designed for ExoMars (launch 2009)
  • ASPERA-4/ELS - Analyser of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms/ Electron Spectrometer on Venus Express
  • ASPERA-3/ELS - Analyser of Space Plasma and Energetic Atoms/ Electron Spectrometer on Mars Express
  • Stereo Camera System for Beagle 2 - Britain's mission to search for life on Mars
  • CAPS/ELS - Cassini Plasma Spectrometer/Electron Spectrometer
  • FONEMA - Fast Omni-directional Non-scanning Energy Mass Analyser on Mars-96
  • JPA - The Johnstone Plasma Analyser aboard the Giotto spacecraft
