CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 23 4-Jun-01 through 10-Jun-01

A. Takeda

GENERAL

Flare activity was moderate with four M-class flares reported. Two of them came from AR 9488, which passed through the south-east quadrant during the week. Late in the week, AR 9484 has raised its activity. A few late C- through early M-class flares are reported.

SXT TECHNICAL

In the current flare sequence, we sometimes find abnormal images (e.g. 5-Jun-01 04:50:59), which are taken in Be filter at DPE 26, the current maximum DPE. To avoid this, the flush counts for Be-filter was updated on 6th from Pre-roi/Full/Pre-exp = 4/1/1 to 8/1/1. As a result, the anomaly has not appeared since the next run of flare mode (e.g. 8-Jun-01 02:27:39).

It turned out that SXT_CO had made mis-operation and flare patrol images had not been taken since 18th May. This caused loss of data in two flares occurred on AR 9488. The situation will be corrected in Monday's first table.

A new flare table for support of HESSI will be tried in this coming week. Details given in the table plan below.

SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010608.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget is intended for those who are planning scientific observation of the total eclipse expected on 21st this month. Recent sunspot activity is summarized, and forecasting a promising target for the observations with small FOV.

CAMPAIGNS

No campaign scheduled during the week.

PERSONNEL

A. Takeda came back on 4th from AGU, and D. McKenzie arrived on 7th.

SEMINARS

No seminar for this week.

SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 24 (11-Jun-01 through 17-Jun-01)

This week, we will try a new flare table to support the observations with HESSI, whose launch is scheduled around 20-Jun. The new table is has 1x1 FOV with 2 filters to achieve high cadence, and exposures optimized for no saturation.

This table plan is likely to change. Prepare for last minute changes.

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
