Sac Peak, Flare study

Dates: Feb. 1 through 12+

Correspondents: Gianna Cauzzi (gcauzzi@arcetri.astro.it)

SXT setup: Mostly standard. ARS2, and 1x1 PFIs in QT/Hi.

        Tentative setup is: 
        QUIET,  AlMg + Al.1, fullres.
                Occasional AL12 + Be, full resolution
                Occasional half resolution AlMg
                Occasional dark frame
        FLARE,  AL12 + Be, full resolution
                Occasional half resolution  (DMcK)

Annular solar eclipse

Dates: Feb. 16, 1999

BAKEOUT

Dates: March 1999

SXT Setup: special tables


SUMER Jet Study

Correspondent: D. Innes

Dates: First two weeks in May 1999, depending on SUMER health.

SXT Setup: Fixed-exposure PFIs, one filter with two exposure durations. Target will be "target of opportunity" active region, probably on the limb.


Polar Jets

Correspondent: H. Hara

Dates: As much as possible when level of activity permits.

SXT setup: 4 x 1 (EW x NS) full resolution PFI on the N polar region (PFI covering half disk / half sky). AlMg filter with 30s exp.time, repeat every 5-10 min.

Dates: Did some 24-25 Oct-97, will continue as conditions warrant


Transit of Mercury - II

Correspondents: CO (Wuelser, Hudson)

Date: Nov. 15, 1999, 20:00-24:00

SXT setup: this time grazing occultation at the N pole (see http://www.arrakis.es/~xgarciaf/151199m.gif for a plot). Probably we'll put long thin FFIs there as we did before.


Experiments/Campaigns recently finished - we have no easy way to show this information, though it's available on miscellaneous versions of this ASCII file.


SPARTAN

The SPARTAN subsatellite was launched Nov. 1 and observed for its nominal two days, and on Nov. 2 the SOPHIE sounding rocket also made coronal observations. We tried to follow the schedules as best we could, but of course Yohkoh cannot observe the distant corona easily. So we emphasized observations of streamer bases and trans-equatorial interconnecting loops (the W limb showed a striking example on Nov. 1-2, and we obtained a time series of full-resolution observations. The analysis may shed more light on the origin of these structures, whether by reconnection or birth, or both, and the SPARTAN observations could be crucial even though largely at higher altitudes.


Dark Sunsets

Dates: As soon as allowable by the orbital elements. (Dec 97?)

Description: This is a one-orbit experiment requested by Professor Acton. The purpose is to collect dark-signal data, beginning right at S/C sunrise and continuing as far as possible into the orbit (FMS).

SXT Setup: Dedicate the FFI sequence to the following two entries. QR AlMg dark DPE=2 QR AlMg dark DPE=26

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT Yohkoh

The SXT instrument is a grazing-incidence soft X-ray telescope. See Tsuneta et al., Solar Physics 136, 37 (1991) for details. The options for an observing setup consist of where we look, how often we take exposures, what resolution they are in, what filters and exposure times, etc, etc. All of this is traded off within a fixed telemetry budget and various other constraints. For certain special operations we'll list some of this information here if we can. Otherwise please contact the SXT chief observer for whatever details are needed. e-mail to the "campaign" account is forwarded to the SXT Chief Observer.
