Slide 59 of 59
Notes:
To sustain a population of 200,000 pulsars currently observed, 1 pulsar must form every 50 years (characteristic lifetime / no. pulsars).
This is consistent with the estimated rate of 1 SN every 100 years in the Galaxy. Moreover only 3 pulsars have been associated with visible SNRs (Crab, Vela and PSR1509-58) out of ~450 pulsars. This is entirely consistent with the difference in lifetimes of typical pulsars and SNRs.
Note however that not all SN may produce pulsars… we need another origin for the production of pulsars, eg accretion induced collapse.
