XMM in space XMM-Newton is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency in which MSSL has a major involvement. It provides X-ray images and spectra, reaching sensitivity levels at least 10 times fainter than the best previous X-ray telescopes with the potential to revolutionise our knowledge of the X-ray Universe.

MSSL is involved with XMM-Newton in three major areas as :

  • Principal Investigator for the Optical Monitor
  • Co-Investigator for the Reflection Grating Spectrometer
  • Co-Investigator for the Survey Science Centre
