UCL MSSL Swift

Over the years I have changed the way I presented my publications. If you just want a list ordered by citation frequency, see the one compiled by Google Scholar, or check the Astronomical Data System ADS.

Here I organize by the subject I studied, and then a list of publications that may be of some interest. I am not including the many Astronomical Telegrams or GCN Circulars, nor the astronomical catalogs where I worked on the documentation and reformatting. At the end I collect some notes on who picked up the story of the first GRB spectrum with the UVOT grism.

Supernovae

I have always thought that a star that turns into a supernova is just incredibly interesting. After many years burning slowly the star chokes when all the central fuel has been used up and ups the game. Large amounts of matter are transmuted, lots of energy is released, and possibly a black hole is formed. This is not going about slowly. Many parts of physics get intimately involved. Its not really spherical an explosion, but not by how much? What electric currents and magnetic fields are there to enhance or direct the energy flowing out? I love the things that we can learn with the quick response of the Swift satellite. Here are some of the publications where I had some input.

Gamma Ray Bursts

From feeling rather indifferent about GRBs in the 1990-ies when their origin was a point of debate, after considering the evidence that had piled up for their origin by the time I joined the Swift team in 2007 my feelings about them changed a lot. One of the "reasons" was that the discovery of the GRBs extragalactic nature owes much to Jan van Paradijs discovery of the optical counterpart. I met Jan when he was a year in Oxford. I think it was 1984. His thouroughness in searching out old data was exemplary. We were both Dutch and shared often our meals in the "Kings Arms" pub. I have no doubt of the quality of his findings. Then, the evidence is quite compelling that they are extragalactic, and that we see them at all is evidence for the enormous energies in GRB. I was hooked. But the most obvious observations are dominated by the physics of the afterglow itself: a relativistic jet emitting from gamma rays to infrared. To get beyond the obvious signature of a jet needs us paying attention to the detailed evolution of the spectrum, the light curve in different bands, the signs of the galactic environment. Not only accurate observations are needed, but also of large variety. The combination of space and ground based observations is in itself a source of error and the reduction of the measurement errors is perhaps crucial in solving the puzzle of what is the cause of the GRBs.

Novae

I'm not very good in the classifications that abound of binary stars; never was or I would have gone into biology. There are several interesting things that happen in binaries and one is where we have one component being a white dwarf star with accretion from its companion. They go nova. Sometimes multiple times. The consensus is that the material accreting onto the white dwarf is mainly hydrogen which piles up until it ignites a nuclear burn at its bottom. We don't know all the details, we are not quite sure how much gets blown off the star in the nova outburst, but it looks like some remains, making the white dwarf heavier over time. At some point it then will collapse. Swift observations have been of the X-ray and UV optical evolution of a number of novae.

Black Holes

Although we see evidence of massive black holes in the centres of galaxies, to see one being born is quite special. Also, the hunt for medium sized BH is exciting.

Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections

One of the challenges of modeling flares and coronal mass ejections is to tie the energetics of the event to the energy generation and energy storage which are quite complicated when considered in detail. However, the overall energetics and evolution can be captured already by careful spatial integration of the phenomena and obtain an equivalent circuit model representation of the system. I investigate that from the powerful tool of the dynamics of the whole circuit system.

Thermal Dynamics of Coronal Loops

The solar corona is filled with magnetic field. Why do some field lines show emission as loops and others not? Surely it is a result of a combination of selective heating and mass loading. My thinking was that the feedback of heat to the chromosphere was an important element. I showed that time delays can cause some interesting changes in the observed loops.

Radiation transport / radiation losses / optically thin radiation

How radiation travels through a medium and its thermalisation are important considerations in interpreting and modeling astronomical observations. Radiation can escape from deep layers when it mostly scatters and inform about the thermodynamic conditions of those layers. Under optically thin conditions in stellar chromospheres line ratios inform about density, volume and temperatures.

Stellar winds

My thesis supervisor Tony Hearn was working on a computer code to compute stellar winds and my goal was to compare his results to observations. As is often the case, not only did the work on the computer code take longer, but also some new insights in the physics of stellar winds (and numerical methods) were discovered. I did however do some theoretical studies -- which illustrated the growing understanding that a proper formulation of the physics and boundary conditions was needed to get sensible results.

Astronomical Catalog Verification and Documentation (NASA-GSFC ADC 1993-1996)

Documentation of many (100+) astronomical catalogs, including reformatting and verification was performed. They are available through the IAU Astronomical Data Centers in France, Japan, and Russia. The american NASA Astronomical Data Center was closed in September 2002 since the access to CDS in France was judged sufficient.
