I am a mechanical design engineer at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. We use UGS / Seimens I-Deas 3D CAD system to design various instruments and components used for space exploration and research purposes.
All designs are modelled in 3D which can then be put together as an assembly within the system. From this assembly the parts can be checked for size and sent to customers for fitting into larger assemblies such as the complete model of the spacecraft.
From the 3D components drawings can be created of the individual parts for manufacture. These drawings are directly linked to the 3D models so any changes to the assemblies will be reflected on the drawings.
