TECHNOLOGY TRANSLATION

Technology translation is about matching scientific or industrial requirements to capability from elsewhere. 'Technology Translators' are highly qualified staff who work to identify opportunities for innovation in the marketplace and connect them with emerging technologies in academic and research laboratories. They then facilitate the exploitation of these opportunities, principally by setting up and helping to manage collaborative partnerships between academic and business organisations.

Specifically, technology translators:

  • Visit industrial and scientific end-users to identify market opportunities and advise them on potentially interesting areas of research and development
  • Set up industrial and academic teams for collaborative research and development projects (assisting with writing proposals and stimulating discussion between prospective partners in the early stages)
  • Help these teams access the available public and private sector funding mechanisms
  • Provide advice to both academic and industrial organisations on project management and commercialisation of cutting-edge technology
  • Produce technology reports, for the membership and the government, collating information in specific areas on request
