GIS Overview

The Grazing incidence spectrometer was born out of the requirement to provide diagnostics in the sub 300 A region. This region is full of useful diagnostic emission lines, particularly those in the iron (Fe) regime which allow useful DEM analysis to be performed. In this region normal incidence optics we're not at the stage of developement that they could produce feasible sensitivities. Recent developements in multilayer optics now provide the capabilities in the upcoming Solar-B EIS mission.
