EIS Master Study Database
Testing and importing a new science study
A new study should be submitted via email and consists of 2 files:
-
A .def file
-
The name of the .def file is the name of the new study with a '_1' appended. This file is generated by the 'eis_mk_study' program of the planning tool using the export study feature.
-
A .txt description file
-
This file is the description of the study, also generated by the planning tool software.
A study can be entered into the master database without this file but the database will not be released until the description file is also available.
Both are plain ascii text files.
If any errors in the study are discovered during testing then an email should be sent to the study proposer detailing the problem(s) and requesting the study definition be fixed and re-submitted - until that happens the study will not be imported into the master database.
When a new study definition is received the two parts are usually in the form of attachments.
Save the attachments to your local hard disk.
The best practice is to create a directory/folder for each study definition received and place the .def and .txt files into the appropriate directory.
The study definition files need to be transferred to the EIS EGSE computer (msslqm) in the Boyd Centre Bat Cave.
This can be done in 2 ways:
-
Copy each study definition folder onto a usb pen drive.
-
Copy the directory and it's contents directly to msslqm using
ssh.
Both methods are described in the procedure below.
Procedure
-
Log onto msslqm as user 'solarb'.
This will usually be done by unlocking the
screen saver.
Just type in the password and press return.
The keeper of the password is
m.whillock@ucl.ac.uk.
-
Copy the new study definition folders to the EGSE computer.
If copying the study definition files using a pen drive, follow these
instructions.
If copying the study definition files using ssh, follow these
instructions.
- For each new study to be imported:
-
Test study on flight spare using the pm (non-master) database.
-
Import the study into the master database
- After all the new studies have been imported into the master database then the master database needs to be copied to the MSSL server:
-
Prepare the database for transfer to the MSSL server.
-
Copy the database to the MSSL server.
That's it, you've finished!
